American Idol Final Performances

Alright, I just watched the American Idol final performance show and just had to say a few things. First, I am amazed that so many people take this television show so seriously. Second, was that really the best song that was sent in to the Idol show? If so we as a country are in dire need of song writing talent. How horrible, please someone with talent send your songs in next year. Bruce I’m talking to you here buddy! :-) Third, I think that bias comes naturally to us all, but I’m a little surprised at how the judges seemed to be biased towards Jordin tonight. I haven’t watched the show the entire season and I’m disappointed that they seemed to look over the flat, pitchy, and off beat portions of her performances tonight. They judged Blake pretty fairly I believe however. His first performance was indeed his best tonight, although I really enjoyed his rendition of “Time of the Season” earlier this year. I won’t be voting because I haven’t done so before now, and feel to do so at this point would be hypocritical. Guess that’s it.

Everyone in my family watches American Idol. Which means I end up watching it about half the time. I think that many of the contestants really do have nice voices. But a nice voice doesn’t make a singer. Let me just grab a couple names out of the stage hat. Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Robert Plant, B.B. King, Willie Nelson, Neil Young and the one and only Kermit the Frog. None of these guys really sing that well. What they all have in common is the magical ability to touch their audience in a way that is honest and heart felt. Granted Kermit sometimes struggles in this area, but you would too with Miss Piggy breathing down your neck all the time. American Idol is so sanitized, sterile and void of emotional connection that all we can do is judge the quality and technique of their singing. It is that single fact that makes this show so successful. The producers make the audience think that they matter. Doesn’t everyone, including me, have an opinion about how this person or that person sounded? My hat is off tothe creators and producers of American Idol. As business plans go, they have got their act together.

Honestly I don’t expect much from American Idol. It entertains me some evenings. Other evenings I just ignore it. Kelly, Carrie and Chris have done well for themselves post Idol. I particularly like Chris, but even he isn’t in the same league as the folks I mentioned earlier in my comment. It takes a lot more than most people have to be a true performer, that’s why we’re all not on stage!
